Jules you must have excellent hearing! had to play it twice to hear the sound!

That was very clear thank you Philip. Will be much happier doing this than the mock mitres (but thats just me :D )

Thank you Philip :D
That is exactly what I wanted to see. I do appreciate the time it must have taken for you to do that.
I will definitely be testing this method in the workroom in the future.

Great job!

I am glad I started this post off, it has been really interesting. Myself, I still interlock the rest of the curtain as per normal, but just leave the hem floating free from the hem. I do, however, only interlock every half width, but also close to the edges and right on the turn of the leading edge. I like the idea of interlining in the hem if the fabric is fine and may try this next time.

This has been fun to read and very informative.

It is more common here in the USA to have the lining tucked under a double folded side hem.

When using a blind hemmer on the side hems do you still have the lining on top of the face fabric?

Thanks for the video, that was very helpful.

Warmest Regards,
Susan

Hi Susan

Using a blind hemmer for the sides isn't a reglar thing here, though the larger well known stores such as J Lewis and Laura Ashley, do.. They use a blind hemmer with the needle on the right hand side to sew the lining on top of the face fabric. I have myself used my regular blind hemmer to sew in the sides with the lining folded in as you mention above. Perfect for speed and also gives the leading edge a bit more umph!

A curtain maker in my area does use a BH on the side hems but she ends up with a rather unpleasant crease down either side of her curtain face fabric.

Do you think she must be folding the edge over to enable her to do it with a conventional BH? The creases don't ever seem to disappear - having 'watched' her curtains hanging at several windows for a good few years now.

I have to say though that her customers have never noticed these crease lines, not even on their plain curtains. I wonder if we're not all paranoid perfectionists?

Am I the only person out here who won't be using the floating method? I have always put the interlining into the hem and I always sew the lining along the hemline too. I think it looks so much nicer and it stops the dirt and creepy crawlies going up inside the curtain, and I shall continue to do so!

Hi Janie,

You do make me smile! I have only ever stitched my lining down on overlong curtains. Do you still do a double turned hem with your method of make?
